Big Boy No. 4014 - Hershey, PA Watch Party

Attention families, rail fans, and history buffs! Get ready for a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime spectacle right here in Hershey.
On Tuesday, July 7th, the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014—the world’s largest operating steam locomotive—is rolling through Hershey! Journeying across the country to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, this massive icon of engineering is bringing history straight to our tracks.
-
Estimated arrival: Around 2:30pm. (Please note: this time is an estimate, and the train is not expected to stop in Hershey).
-
The best vantage point: We will be gathering on Hershey History Center property next to and overlooking the Derry Road grade crossing to witness this steam-powered titan thunder past as it continues its cross-country journey. The green areas on the map show available parking spaces (paid parking can be used toward your total museum admission). The orange areas are where spectators may gather (no parking). The blue arrows show the direction from which the train will travel.
-
There is no charge to spectators in the viewing area.
The museum will be open from 10am to 3pm. A special model train layout will be operating at the museum for this event. Please bring lawn chairs to set up on the grass to enjoy watching the train roll by. Rock ‘N Bounce Treats truck will be on site selling ice cream and hot dogs close to the train viewing area.
Parking for a fee will open at the museum by 9am, and your fee can be applied to your museum admission. No cars are allowed on or near the grass.
Celebrate America's 250th Anniversary with the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society at the Hershey History Center. Don't miss your chance to hear the whistle blow and feel the ground shake as a true American legend passes by!
RAIL SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
-
Remember, trains can’t stop quickly to avoid people or vehicles on the tracks.
-
A train’s distance from you and its speed can be deceiving.
-
The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet – take extra precaution and stand back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks..
-
Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and right-of-way are private property – please do not trespass.
-
Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive – ALWAYS expect a train and assume tracks are active.
-
Keep drones at least 25 feet away from all railroad tracks and follow all FAA regulations on their use.
-
Please leave dogs safely at home. Thank you.
Please stay tuned and check our website for event updates.
