The Stauffer
Mennonite Cemetery sits on a hillside above Bachmanville Road
in Derry Township, just north of the Conewago township line. The
church is located in Conewago Township while the cemetery is in
Derry Township. The cemetery was established 1857 by three men
who purchased one acre of ground so people would have a burial
ground and is documented on the map of Derry Township published
in the Dauphin County Historical Atlas of 1875, p. 69.
In
1999 volunteers from the Derry Township Historical Society recorded
the cemetery and compared their report to the listing provided
by Pastor J. F. Zeager produced in 1984 by Bruce Hartman and Thomas
Lehman. The final listing records 424 burials and includes the
partial listing that has been available on the Internet for a
number of years.
The
cemetery was officially established about 1857 although the earliest
death is much earlier, in 1799.
