Preservation Gala 2018

Hockey Night in Hershey

The 22nd Annual Preservation Gala will feel like a night of "old-time hockey," revisiting over eight decades of Hershey Bears history!

This year's Gala will reflect on hockey's indelible impact on our community for over 80 years, from the inception of the Hershey B'ars to the modern-day Bears. Eight decades of history, heroes, and hockey players align on this one special evening to celebrate the icons of skates and sticks for Hockey Night in Hershey. As part of the theme, we'll celebrate "Old Time Hockey" during the Award and social program of the Gala, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m, in the historic Ice Palace, the original rink of the Hershey B'ars.

Guests will then be welcomed into Hersheypark Arena, home ice of the Hershey Bears from 1936 until 2002, where we will present the premier screening of B'ars to Bears: Hershey's Hockey Dynasty, a documentary film produced by the Historical Society. Join us for a night like no other; a special program that welcomes the community to share memories with the players from teams gone by, fans from the past and present, as well as those who helped to shape hockey in Hershey and beyond.

The 22nd Annual Preservation Gala will feel like a night of "old-time hockey," revisiting over eight decades of Hershey Bears history. Celebrating days gone by when players and fans alike reveled in the spirit of the game, attendees will delight in the exclusive access and a meet-and-greet with our film participants and special guests for the evening – including some of the players who earned penalty records that defined the era of old time hockey. Other features of the Gala include special access to the ceremonial trophies, including the current and original Calder Cups, which characterized the Bears championships; the opportunity to dine in the historic Ice Palace; and view a Gala-only, exclusive "Old Time Hockey" video feature and a meet/greet with past penalty minute recipients, like Bonvie and Henderson. This part of the evening will conclude with the presentation of the annual Preservation Awards.

Guests will then move to Hersheypark Arena, for the premier screening of B'ars to Bears: Hershey's Hockey Dynasty. Other highlights of the evening include:

  •  hockey displays with rarely-seen artifacts
  • silent and live auctions including one-of-a-kind Bears hockey items
  • "bring your skates" event to skate on the Arena ice during the Gala
  •  opportunities to meet the film participants. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

B’ars to Bears: Hershey’s Hockey Dynasty

In 1938, the Hershey Bears left the EAHL to join the American Hockey League…and the rest is “Chocolate and Ice” history. 11 Calder Cups later; over 5,000 victories in the AHL; and with more than 15 members in the AHL Hall of Fame, the Bears just celebrated their 80th anniversary. As part of this celebration, the Hershey Derry Township Historical Society is producing the documentary B’ars to Bears: Hershey’s Hockey Dynasty. This film will follow one of the most storied franchises in hockey—from their beginnings in the original Ice Palace to the historic Hershey Sports Arena and now the present day Giant Center. It will explore the formation of the amateur club, Hershey B’ars, and their transformation into the professional Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. A multitude of rich and colorful stories, highlighting players, teams, and championship seasons, will be shared by individuals who had the honor to wear, work with, and cheer on the Chocolate and White. Join us to celebrate this legacy and be part of the premier screening of the documentary
